Doncaster to Long Sandall and Barnby Dun
Description
The canal runs parallel to the River Don where the river isn't navigable.
Donny AA's water is split into two sections.
The largest water runs from above the Prison at Doncaster and for a few miles to the railway bridge near Long Sandal Lock.
The second section runs from the swing bridge at Barnby Dun for about a mile before it splits to form the New Junction Canal and Stainforth And Keadby Canal.
Width is around 25 metres and depth is around 8 feet down the track.
Roach, Skimmers, Hybrids, Perch and Gudgeon are the most common fish, but Chub and Bream can show occasionally.
Methods
The pole is by far the most popular method.
Try fishing over low feed content groundbait at around 9 metres. A couple of balls at the start with loose fed pinkies is your safest bet.
Do not feed when the canal is pulling hard otherwise the fish will spread out.
The whip at around 3 or 4 metres is also worth a go if the weather is still enough.
The Groundbait Feeder or Bomb, tight to a far bank feature, is the best way of targeting the Chub. On still days when the tow on the canal is almost still, a waggler can be more productive.
Rigs
Fishing fine is the only way to go. A fine wire tipped float of around 0.8 to 1.2 grams needs to be dotted down. A lot of bites only move the float a few millimetres so finesse is important.
Fish with the rig dropping through the last third using no.11 shot spread out below the bulk.
Small hooks around 22 & 24 and hooklength around 1lb (0.006) will get you bikes. Any heavier and you really will notice a slowdown in the action.
